In a thrilling series of matches, the ABF Men’s Epee Team (Goh Zhen Ping, Ip Yuan Chang and Lee Lin De) stormed their way into the finals of the Pesta Sukan Fencing Festival 2016. Entering the direct elimination tableaux unfancied with a rank of 4th out of 12 teams, the team overcame very strong opponents to emerge the overall champions.
Starting the day with a bye in the round of 16, the team first overcame the SMU team in the quarterfinals, with a score of 45-31. The team took the lead right from the very first bout, with an especially stellar performance by Zhen Ping that saw him deal with the SMU anchor Sean Lim handily in a 9-2 scoreline.
The next bout in the semi-finals was critical: they faced the top-ranked team from Blade Club (BLD). While the scoreline remained extremely tight at the start before the BLD team took the lead in the 4th bout, the team rallied together to mount a ferocious fightback, eventually pulling level again at 28-28. The team then fenced very well in the final round of bouts, emerging the victors with a score of 45-42, a slim but clear margin of victory.
Compared to the semifinal, the final was a surprisingly muted affair against Duxton Plain Fencing Club (DPF). Fired up from their previous match, the team stormed to an early lead and held on to win 45-31 handily. We’re very proud of our homegrown epee boys for their never-say-die attitude and their gritty comeback, well done guys!
