Fencing: Wang lands women's foil gold

Singapore's Wang Wenying has given the Republic its first gold medal in fencing at this year's South-east Asian (SEA) Games. 

She beat opponent Justine Gail Tinio of the Philippines 15-7 in the final of the women's foil individual event at the OCBC Arena to win her first individual medal.

She was the only gold medallist in today's fencing competition. 

Wang, 34, had contested in the 2007 and 2011 editions of the Games. Although she won a silver medal in the women's foil team event in 2011, she had never won in the individual events until now. 

Her male counterparts Lim Wei Wen and Choy Yu Yong each clinched a silver medal in the men's épée individual and men's sabre individual events respectively, while Samson Lee won the joint bronze medal in the épée individual event with Thailand's Chamcharern Panthawit.

The women's foil team event, in which Wang will also be competing in, will take place on Saturday (June 6) at the OCBC Arena.
