Golden hat-trick for junior fencers
SINGAPORE – The Republic’s fencers enjoyed their best-ever day at the South East Asia Fencing Federation (SEAFF) Championships 2014 on Friday (Jan 24), collecting three gold medals in junior team competition.
The junior women’s foil team of Liane Wong, Aarya Berthier, Lau Ysien and Thalia Lee were the first in action, edging Thailand 35-34.
Their sabre counterparts comprising Lau Ywen, Jolie Lee, Joyce Ng and Chrislyn Tan then came from a point down heading into the final bout to overcome Thai opponents for a 45-42 win.
The junior men’s sabre team of Choy Yu Yong, Clive Leu, Lam Jing Siang and Jerrold Woo wrapped up proceedings with a 45-42 victory over hosts Malaysia.
Having picked up a solitary gold medal in senior competition (women’s team foil), Singapore’s junior fencers are enjoying a more fruitful outing.
Individual gold medals for Donna Lim (epee) and Joshua Lim (foil) on Thursday means Singapore have picked up five gold medals in the Under 20 category, apart from two silver and six bronze medals.
The SEAFF Championships is a biennual tournament featuring some 300 fencers from seven South-east Asian countries.
